One of the highlights of the PNE Winter Fair is the WinterLights display, presented by BC Hydro . Prepare to be enchanted as you walk through the Polar Passage light tunnel , marvel at Candy Cane Lane , and journey through enchanted lands filled with glowing foxes, seals, giant moose, and dazzling arches. My “Fair” well ….

In January 1990 I began a temporary administrative job with Abbotsford Agrifair while they recruited someone for the position. I didn’t leave until August 2015.

During that time, not only did my job go from temporary to permanent, but it went from part time to full time. I briefly left Agrifair in March 2006 and went to Cloverdale Rodeo & Exhibition Association but in August I was invited to go back to Agrifair as General Manager and by November I returned.

In 1996 I attended my first BC Fairs conference held in Pt. Alberni. I don’t remember the sessions at all. What I do remember is the fun night – a harbor cruise in the dark where we couldn’t see a thing and an evening in someone’s room having a beach party while Jack Jackson sat on a chair in the hallway and sang.

I’ve attended every BC Fairs conference since then except for the 2020 and 2001 which were cancelled due to Covid. Attending the conferences has given me the opportunity to see new places, meet new people and make new friends but most importantly learn as much as possible to do my job for 25 years. I was fortunate to also attend CAFÉ and IAFE conferences but BC Fairs were by far my favorite.

Working in the non-profit world – both for a fair as paid staff and for BC Fairs as a volunteer director – was not my life plan. It evolved naturally. And now with no regrets I look back on all I experienced and all I accomplished because of fairs with pride and joy.

I have never enjoyed being in the spotlight and avoided it if at all possible. So in October 2004 at the annual BC Fairs conference in Abbotsford when I was approached to let my name stand for director, I firmly said ‘no thank you’. After much discussion and persuasive argument from a few who believed in me, I very reluctantly said yes. That was back when BC Fairs Annual General Meeting and elections were held during the conference. My ‘team’ even had an election campaign over the 36 hours. I wrote a speech because I absolutely couldn’t wing it. I delivered it at the AGM Saturday morning with a tremor in my voice, rattling paper in my hands and knocking knees. And I was successfully elected to the BC Fairs Board of Directors.

The first couple years was definitely a learning experience – how to be a director and how BC Fairs operated. As I gained knowledge, I also gained confidence which enabled me to engage in discussions and begin making suggestions.

Over the past 20 years I’ve enjoyed being on a variety of committees – awards, conference, silent auction, marketing and sponsorship – as a committee member and some as committee chair. There’s a lot to do as a director of BC Fairs and our Executive Director appreciates all the active participation and support we can provide.

I was also privileged to be part of our fair evaluation program. Even though BC Fairs no longer tours the province evaluating our member fairs – which is unfortunate – I encourage you to visit your neighbor fair. The experience will greatly benefit your own fair planning. Get to know the fair organizers, exchange ideas, share equipment. There’s so many ways to help each other.

I have also had the honor of serving on the executive committee as secretary, first and second vice president and treasurer. I’ve always refused the president’s position. As in any organization, for profit or not, the team is made up of a variety of people, each bringing their ideas, experience and goals to the mix. This is what makes the job – and life – interesting.

I am now at a point in my life where I have different goals and priorities. My husband Jim (of 46 years) has retired and our daughter Lisa and her family – husband AJ and two children Ben and Ellie – have moved to Prince George. We ourselves moved to Sechelt in 2022 but have constantly been on the move in our RV the last two years. We are healthy and happy and want to make the most of our retirement years. I feel it is time to say ‘fair-well’ to the fair community and definitely make way for someone new to step onto the board. You may have reservations, but if I can step out of my comfort zone and act as a director for 20 years, I know you can too. I strongly encourage you to get on board!! You have so much to gain in return for all you can offer.

My final words – thank you to the fair community as a whole, for giving me 34 years of fun and laughter (which made up for the occasional trials and tears). Thank you to BC Fairs Board of Directors – each one of you over the past twenty years – for showing me what working together as a team could be. Thank you to our Executive Director Janine for so ably ‘herding the cats’, we most often were as directors. It has been a wonderful life – FAIRWELL!!!

Celebrating Excellence: Sunaina Sharma Awarded the $2,000 BC Fairs Scholarship

In recognition of academic achievement and a profound understanding of the impact of wildfires on agriculture in British Columbia, Sunaina Sharma has been awarded the prestigious $2,000 BC Fairs scholarship. This scholarship, presented annually to a deserving student, highlights Sharma's exceptional dedication and insights into one of the province's most pressing issues.

Sunaina Sharma, a proud resident of Abbotsford, is set to embark on her post-secondary journey at Simon Fraser University this fall, enrolling in the French Cohort program. Her fascination with the intersection of wildfires and agriculture stemmed from her personal experiences witnessing the smoke drift over Abbotsford and the widespread media coverage that ensued. This prompted her to delve deeper into the topic, realising its significance for the community and the agricultural sector.

Her scholarship application essay eloquently explored both the adverse and unexpected positive effects of wildfires on agriculture in British Columbia. Sunaina's research revealed a nuanced understanding, highlighting the many challenges to the agriculture industry while explaining the benefits like how the nutrient-rich ashes from wildfires can foster new growth and rejuvenate soil quality, which benefits productivity. Reflecting on her findings, Sunaina remarked, "I was surprised to learn about the benefits that wildfires can bring to soil. It challenged my initial perceptions and broadened my perspective on environmental dynamics."

Beyond her academic pursuits, Sunaina Sharma exemplifies a commitment to continuous learning and community engagement. Her passions include tutoring in French, contributing as employee of a local business, and volunteering at various community events, all while nurturing her love for gardening—a testament to her multifaceted interests and proactive approach to making a positive impact.

The selection process for the BC Fairs scholarship involved a thorough review by the board of directors, who were impressed by Sunaina's comprehensive analysis, passion for learning, and dedication to understanding the complexities of agriculture in British Columbia amidst environmental challenges.

Sunaina's receipt of the $2,000 scholarship not only recognizes her academic excellence but also celebrates her as a promising leader who is poised to make meaningful contributions to her community and beyond. Her journey embodies the spirit of inquiry, resilience, and commitment to sustainability that defines the ethos of BC Fairs and its dedication to supporting the next generation of leaders in agriculture.

Congratulations to Sunaina Sharma on this well-deserved achievement, and best wishes for her future endeavours at Simon Fraser University and beyond.

BC Fairs Member Leaves A Legacy

Allison Bowers always felt a need to give back. Whether it was through her local fair or contributing as a board member to BC Fairs. Through her experience she contributed to the development of organisations like ours.

It is with regret that we announce Allison Bowers, long time BC Fairs member, passed away suddenly on December 12. For everyone who worked with Allison, you can appreciate what a loss this is to our industry. She will be missed.

On behalf of the BC Fairs family, our thoughts are with those who were close with Allison, especially family. We are sorry for your loss and hope you have some comfort knowing she has left a legacy of support for BC Fairs and all our members across British Columbia.

PNE Introduces The Future

BC Fairs 2023 Scholarship Dilemma Solved With A Second Award

Emma Dinn, BC Agriculture Fairs, Exhibitions and Events 2023 scholarship winner

If you spent time around the agriculture industry in Chilliwack, you may have met this year's scholarship winner Emma Dinn milking cows or feeding calves at Dinn Farms or working the till at the Garden House. A student at Agassiz Elementary and Secondary School, she is a member of the Agassiz Rainbow 4-H club where she learned about the scholarship opportunity. “Spending time at fairs in the summer has created some of my favourite summer memories and so I figured that this application presented an awesome opportunity”.

This year's theme, Cannabis and BC’s Agriculture Industry, drew dozens of quality responses. BC Fairs president Tom Harter was very impressed with both the quantity and quality of the entries, “I have had the privilege to be involved with our scholarship program for many year's and am always impressed with the response. This year's submissions were outstanding, and I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone who submitted”.

In fact, the responses were so well researched and written that the scholarship committee had a challenge on their hands. The graded program involves several board members of BC Fairs reading and grading each submission in a number of categories. While all submissions were well regarded, two stood out and the points totals were less than ½ a point apart. This posed a dilemma for the committee until one of the members generously offered to make a donation towards a second place scholarship award and BC Fairs was able to contribute and match the donation.

Sharleen Arink, second place winner of the BC Agriculture Fairs, Exhibitions and Festivals 2023 Scholarship

This year's second place winner, Sharleen Arink from Chilliwack BC has always been committed to the land and animals through living on a hobby farm and being involved in 4-H. When asked about giving advice to other young people about being involved in 4-H to grow their passion and knowledge for agriculture, Sharleen said “Do it. You will find a second family with interests similar to yours. Give it one year and you will do it again”. She shared that she was surprised at the positive impact of Cannabis farming, “At first I didn’t know a lot about the bill and wrongly assumed there were no positives”. As she dug into her research she quickly realised there is a balance between positives and challenges to the industry.

Emma Dinn will be off shortly to the University of Toronto where she will study Arts and Science - Humanities. Sharleen Arink is attending University of the Fraser Valley to get a Bachelor of Science.

With the scholarship going towards youth who are or will be actively involved in agriculture Emma summarises why it's important, “The world's population relies on agriculture for food, and yet as the population grows, the amount of space being used for agriculture seems to be shrinking. In my opinion, this is largely due to a disconnect between the agricultural sector and the general public. If more youth were involved in agriculture in some capacity, I think that it would be more valued by society.”

To date BC Fairs has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to youth from across the province. Each year a committee is assigned the task to create a theme and after the scholarship is promoted through a number of channels, grade each submission. BC Fairs was originally established by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1910 to promote the industry at events across British Columbia. Today the Association represents 47 not-for-

profit community events and continues to stay true to the original mandate by providing leadership and guidance around the agricultural aspects of each while promoting them around the world.

BC Fairs Buy BC Agriculture Trivia Contest A Big Success

We asked British Columbians to participate in our 2022 Agriculture Trivia Contest and you responded. We had entries from all across BC and many positive comments on the agricultural education element. British Columbians love their farmers!

From all entries we held a random draw for $500 cash and a Buy BC prize package. One of our winners, Susan Flett from Surrey commented, "Thank you for everything BC Fairs...I appreciate it very much", while Brandy Hooker from Vernon said, "'What a fun contest, it was great to learn so many interesting facts about agriculture in BC". Our third winner, Brooke Roshinsky from Lake Country was both appreciative and complimentary about the trivia aspect of the contest.

2022 Scholarship Winner Announced

Kaden Tamis, a Holy Cross Regional High School Graduate from Surrey, B.C. is this years BC Association of Agricultural Fairs & Exhibitions scholarship recipient. Throughout his education Kaden has been recognized with numerous awards including the Gold Honour Roll, Instrumental Solid Performer of the Year, Basketball Most Improved Player and Outstanding Achievement in Christian Education. His biggest honour came outside of school when he received the 4-H Pledge Award , the first that has been granted in 10 years. The award recognizes demonstrated aspects of the 4-H pledge which includes 'My head to clear thinking; my heart to greater loyalty; my hands to larger service and my health for better living for the club, the community, the country and the world'.

Kaden gives back to his community through volunteering including his Music Student Leadership team, Alter Server at Precious Blood Parish , helping with food donations to the local soup kitchen and multiple roles with 4-H. He also has significant experience in the agriculture industry have worked at farms throughout the Fraser Valley and supporting local neighbours with chores around their homes.

Pass Creek Fall Fair Champion Lived To Give

Our industry recently lost passionate fair supporter Irene Hill. Irene was a bright light in making the Pass Creek Fall Fair what it is today. The fair community across BC sends heartfelt condolences to family and friends. We hold Irene in high esteem for her many contributions. She will be missed.

OBITUARY

It is with heavy hearts that we sadly mark the peaceful passing of Irene Clara Hill.

Irene “Buckley” Hill was born in Trail, B.C., raised in the Pend Oreille on the Buckley Homestead where the 7 Mile Damn is now situated & the Buckley campground.

Daughter of Arthur & Marion Buckley, sister to Anna Buckley Mclean & Neil- deceased), Gary Buckley (Diane-deceased), Hugh Buckley (Shirley), Kathy Buckley Seville (Jack- deceased) & Fred Buckley (Janice)

Irene married Donald Hill on December 16th, 1952 at the Columbia Gardens family home. Don & Irene moved to Robson in 1964 where they purchased property & built their home and lived there until 2019, when they moved to Castlewood.

Irene spent many years volunteering with Girl Guides and retired as District Commissioner. Irene enjoyed bowling, sewing, gardening and her family. After Colleen and Donna left home, Irene joined Don travelling with Emil Anderson Construction and worked on numerous paving projects through out the province until retirement.

Irene & Don joined the Pass Creek Fall Fair organization and help build it into the Fair grounds it is today. All the buildings at the Fair grounds were built by Irene & Don with the help of wonderful volunteers. Irene was the main organizer of the Pass Creek Fall Fair for over 25 years. Irene helped host two R.C.M.P. Musical Rides and numerous other community events held at the grounds.

Irene leaves behind her loving husband of nearly 70 years Don Hill, daughter’s Colleen “Hill” Mooney (Craig), Donna Hill Smith (Rick) Grand-daughters Jamie Madeira (Dan), Jessica Smith (Charlie) Great-grandson’s Lincoln & Knox Madeira & Levi Roan Coleman.

Jocelyn Kerr, a British Columba Northern Exhibition and 4H family member is in need of assistance.

On December 31, 2021 Jocelyn Kerr's life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Jocelyn and her family are currently staying at Ronald McDonald House as she receives treatment at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver to battle this challenge. She will be undergoing chemotherapy treatments and will lose her hair. She is searching for untreated red hair as there is currently none available at the hair donation bank. She has been told that her hair mixed with some blonde can be used; however, this is Jocelyn’s graduation year and she would like her wig to look as close to her natural color as possible. Here is the irony of this situation: Jocelyn has donated her hair 3 times in the past to cancer patients, and now she is in need of some help.

In 2021 Jocelyn was a 4H ambassador for the central interior region and unfortunately has had to resign for her 2nd year due to this current diagnosis. She has been a positive energy at the British Columbia Northern Exhibition, always happy, cheery, helpful, and full of information about 4H.

Salmon Arm Winter Fun Fest Closes Another Successful Year

Salmon Arm, BC – Following Covid-cancellation of the September 2021 Salmon Arm Fair, organizers immediately went to work on a winter festival. This would be a new event for the community that took place at Salmon Arm Fairgrounds from 4pm – 9pm on Friday November 26 ^th and Saturday November 27 ^th , 2021. The 2-day festival was well supported by the City of Salmon Arm, Salmon Arm Tourism, Salmon Arm Downtown Business Association and Economic Development. The festival was free to attend and featured many activities including local artisans, captivating light display, live performances, horse drawn wagon rides, and visits with Santa. There was a wonderful mix of vendors selling local arts and crafts and food items.

As Covid 19 has cancelled most if not all events in the region for the past two years, we felt there was (is) a growing demand for events and activities, especially during the holiday season, and there are even fewer that truly entertain both adults and children in an easily accessible and affordable way.

The Salmon Arm Winter Fun Fest is a two-day family-friendly event that gave residents of Salmon Arm and the surrounding area fun activities to do with friends and family at the start of the winter season. The event was very successful despite the rain and cool temperatures. It was estimated we had about 3,000 guests over the two days. We are planning for the Salmon Arm Winter Fun Fest to be an annual event growing to include other parts of the community. The event also included a very well attended Holiday Parade on Saturday, November 27th at 3PM with spectators lining the route from the Fairgrounds through downtown.

"We are thrilled to bring the Salmon Arm Winter Fun Fest to the Shuswap and are looking forward to providing folks with an unforgettable holiday experience," says Jim McEwan, Salmon Arm Fair manager. “The past two years have been tough for everyone, and as we had to cancel the fair due to Covid restrictions, we felt a fun family festival might brighten their Christmas spirit”.

While the ongoing global pandemic continues, there is also no better time to brighten spirits. Winter Fun Fest 2021 celebrated winter in the Shuswap while complying with COVID-19 Safety Protocols. We were aware the Provincial health orders may force us to cancel the event, however, we were also confident we could move forward with plans for a safe celebration and hoped new Covid 19 protocols at the time didn’t put the event on ice.

Winter Fun Fest 2021 proudly featured 100% local artists, talent, partners, volunteers and businesses, with 100% of the budget spent locally in our region. 100% local pride!

Event Included Popular Virtual and In Person Elements

The Alberni District Fall Fair ran a successful reduced event in 2021. We thank everyone that came out and supported us. We were pleased to bring in some new partners that built some fantastic displays. It was great to see the interaction of the community after a long dry period of no events taking place.

For all those that didn’t manage to take in the live event we have included video clips of some of the attractions and interviews with key individuals responsible for organizing our event on our virtual fair website www.myfair.ca .

In keeping with our mission to promote agriculture education we offered the “Shop Local Grocery Shopping Game” once again virtually on the myfair.ca website. This unique game teaches individuals participating about what can be purchased locally, the nutritional value of the products and how to budget your money wisely. All products were interpreted into the Indigenous Nuu-chah-nulth language.

Something new this year, we were pleased to put together a brochure of a self guided driving tour of local farmgate stands in the Alberni Valley. This brochure includes a map and description of various farm stands.

Rolla Skate Club to opens its doors at the PNE’s Rollerland building

Since the start of Rolla Skate Club almost three years ago, finding a venue to host their in-person classes turned out to be a ride. From having classes at parking lots, tiny yoga studios, and art galleries, to settling in the late Skate Church at Kerrisdale, Rolla has been everywhere.

So after many years of looking for a permanent home for Rolla Skate Club, co-founders Carla and Lucy have finally found their long held dream place; a 20,000 sq/ft space to host all of Rolla’s magic at the Rollerland building at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE).

With the new space, Rolla Skate Club will be able to host classes, events, Short Track Roller Derby games, and even a mini indoor skate park.

In the last year and half the COVID pandemic brought many hits and changes for folks at Rolla. So being able to finally get a big win after many, many lows has brought a lot of happy tears for the Rolla team.

“It’s been a long time in this community that we have been working under one umbrella or another to find a permanent home for roller skating in this city,” says Carla. Having found a space for roller skating not only means a big win for Rolla Skate Club, but also for the growing roller skating community in Vancouver.

“It’s so important to have a place that anyone can go to be active and build strength without judgement, that is also fun and indoors in Vancouver! Especially in the winter I struggle with being active as we all know how gloomy it gets �� so having a place that isn’t the gym where I feel connected to a community is so beneficial to my (and many others) well being!” – Margaret Gravesdale, RSC Customer

The history of Rollerland at the PNE has shifted a lot, from formerly being the Pure Foods Building in 1931 to becoming the Rollerland building to host the growing roller skating community at the time. So for the team at Rolla to be able to settle in a space that has a history of roller skating has also made it more special to bring the skating groove and community back to it.

The grand opening of the new and improved Rolla Skate Club home at Rollerland at the PNE will take place on Saturday, December 4th.

Congratulations to Patricia Suter of Hixon, B.C., winner of a two-night stay at Tree to Me Inn , in the heart of the Similkameen Valley, plus $600 in spending money.

Patricia commented, "I am very excited to have won the grand prize. I live in Hixon, B.C., which is a small community located along Highway 97 between Quesnel and Prince George. I am retired and spent a lot of my time doing what I love, which is photography. I am the treasurer for the Hixon Community Association , as well as being an active member of Soup Group that in the winter months makes a large pot of soup and delivers a quart jar to each of our seniors and single parents; we recently purchased planters so we can use our own grown vegetables and herbs. Hixon hosts a parade and Fall Fair every summer with the whole community participating or attending, and the hall showcases a large array of horticulture. We have not been able to have this event for the past two years due to Covid. My friend Jan Eckert gave me fresh vegetables from her garden, and April Kerman sent me the link for the photo contest. I asked Preslie Malcolm if she would help me by pulling a wagon full of vegetables so I could take a photo. Thanks to all of my helpers that made this photo happen."

BC Fairs 2021 scholarship winner Tyler Berretta has arrived at Princeton University and is set to begin classes in a week. As a thank you to all members he shared a photo.

Tyler commented, "I am exhilarated to be on the Princeton campus, so filled with energy and excitement for the upcoming academic year. As I am set to begin my classes, I want to thank BC Fairs for their generosity and support. The BCAFE scholarship has helped me fund my studies, allowing me to grow as a learner and make lasting relationships with students from an array of backgrounds."

Rock Creek & Boundary Fall Fair Cancelled But Popular Raffle Still A Go

The Board of Directors of the Rock Creek & Boundary Fair Association announced that the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Rock Creek & Boundary Fall Fair scheduled for September 18, 2021, has been postponed to September 17th & 18th, 2022. This most difficult decision was reached after the recent announcement on August 20, 2021, by the Interior Health Authority, regarding new COVID-19 restrictions surrounding gatherings and events. The Board never dreamed that they would have to postpone the Fair for a second year. They were so close and now tremendously disappointed.

The postponement of the 2020 Fair had a substantial financial impact on the organization but with careful management they were able to weather it. A second year of no Fair will have a deep impact. They are still proceeding with the popular 50/50 draw which will take place on Saturday, September 18th at 3:00 pm. They are pivoting to a virtual exhibit competition, similar to what was done in 2020, and more details will be released shortly. 4-H Clubs will also proceed, following proper public health protocols, with their livestock and ranch horse achievement day. Photos will be posted of the virtual exhibits and 4-H projects.

The top priority is the health and safety of all fair-goers, vendors, exhibitors, entertainers, volunteers and the people of the Boundary Communities and everyone from across BC and beyond who support the Fair every year. Over the next week they will be contacting all the attractions, vendors, exhibitors and sponsors who had committed to making this year’s Fair a success. For those who purchased tickets for the Fair, their tickets will be honoured for the 2022 Diamond Jubilee Celebration.

The Challenger Map, also known as the BC Relief Map, was a beloved PNE attraction for decades, enjoyed by millions of visitors from 1954 until 1997. The map was retired when the BC Pavilion building was deconstructed in the late 90s. Handcrafted with love by forestry mogul George Challenger and his family in the basement of their home, it was a gift to all British Columbians. Though it hasn’t been at the PNE for almost 25 years it is still one of the attractions that the PNE team gets asked about most often. We’re excited to have a section of it back on display at this year’s PNE Fair, while we work towards restoring the entire map for a future exhibit.

Creston Valley Fair Regrettably Cancelled

The Creston Valley Fall Fair Society has cancelled the 2021 event which was scheduled for September 10 - 11. After careful consideration and taking into account the upward trend in local Covid-19 cases the decision was made to cancel this years event.

"We very much hope that by next year this virus will be conquered and events such as this can once again be safely held and enjoyed by all. Hopefully enough people will remain dedicated and interested in putting it together. Thank you all for your continued support." Randy Meyer, President of the organization said.

The Little Fair that Could and Did

This past weekend the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association presented the 107th Annual Coombs Fair. The 2021 Fair was a smaller event this year due to COVID restrictions. Fair Manager Megan Pattison managed a dedicated core group of volunteers. Ensuring that fairgoers experienced the enduring community spirit of the Coombs Fair.

This year was the ‘Year of the Chicken’. Events and demonstrations centred around this theme. A sanctioned American Poultry Association show was ran and organized by Bruce Bickle. The Arrowsmith Hall housed ‘Chicken’ Arts and Crafts.

Children enjoyed the two bouncy castles that were setup in the lower grounds. Music at the fair included a range of music genres from easy listening to reggae.

The local 4H Club competed in competitions providing fairgoers experiences with farm animals.

Visitors to the riding ring experienced equestrian events including vaulting, and dressage.

The lives of Colin Springford and Liz Salhstom, were remembered for their dedication and support of the AAA and the Coombs Fair.

The 2021 Coombs Fair was a great success. Congratulations to the AAA and its volunteers for a job well done.

British Columbia Northern Exhibition Host Organization Gives Back To Community

This year The Prince George Agricultural and Historical Association (the organization that hosts the British Columbia Northern Exhibition BCNE ) was looking for ways to keep their name front and center after being shut down during covid and having to cancel the fair for only the third time in its 109-year history. We reached out to the Council of Seniors to offer our services to any senior who needed help with yard work. When we received our first call it was a little worrying as the job was huge and definitely not something we could tackle on our own. We did not want to say no so reached out to a friend and within 24hours had almost 30 volunteers and a few businesses on board to help out.

Pineview 4H provided a majority of the labour and the kids worked hard. In addition to 4H we had BCNE volunteers, a few other community members and businesses who stood up to help this gentleman. One of our volunteers was my 80 years old. 4 dump trailers, 2 hours of weed whacking and lawn mowing later we had the yard safe enough for this gentleman to stay in his home. A contractor is arriving later this week to replace stairs with a new ramp. We love it when a community comes together to support its residents.

In a separate initiative we teamed up with CHHAPS (Canadian Horse Heritage Preservation Society) to bring a little joy to some seniors at Rainbow Lodge. One of the things we hear most at the fair is that the seniors miss the barns as it is a long walk and many just don’t have the ability to make it anymore. So, we thought why not bring the animals to them.

Suzie Barrio, a member of both organizations, loaded up her horse Teaka and took her to hang out with some local seniors. The smiles were amazing. With all that Covid has stopped us from doing it was great to be able to bring so much joy to a few faces.

BC Fairs Announces 2021 Scholarship Winner

Vancouver, B.C.'s Tyler Berretta, our 2021 BC Fair's Scholarship winner is described by his teachers as 'gifted' and 'promising'. Together with his recent educational pursuits at Vancouver College he gives back to the community through volunteering. Most recently he worked with Bumpin' Bakery , a non-profit founded in 2013 by Vancouver College students to serve those marginalized by injustice and poverty including residents of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Part of the application process was development of an essay that connects agriculture in British Columbia with current issues. Tylers' submitted essay titled 'Plowing Through the Pandemic: Emerging with Agricultural Advancements', was thoroughly researched providing many insights into the challenges that agriculture faced during the past 18 months.

Tyler currently works as a Laboratory and Research Assistant at BC BioProducts Institute, with plans to travel east to attend Princeton University studying Engineering.

BC Fairs Kicks Off Season With New Logo

To coincide with our 111th year BC Fairs has introduced a new logo. A lot has changed for our member events over the years but one thing remains constant, agriculture is at the centre of what we do. The new logo reflects both our member and organizations history in the province while reaffirming our responsibility to connect all British Columbians to agriculture and local food.

It's a big year for BC Fairs as we introduce a number of initiatives to connect all British Columbians to the many organizations and events across the province that deliver fun, education and of course food. Stay tuned here for exciting developments as we continue our journey always focused on connecting people to agriculture.

We don’t know what the end of July will look like as far as COVID19, but we do know that we can’t and will not stay still and do nothing. We are anticipating that we will not be allowed to have a general attendance fair, but we will be true to our 120-year goals and objectives which is to promote and educate about the importance of agriculture.

The typical dates for Country Fest would be July 24th & 25th, this year the typical two-day fair will become a two-week fair!

YES, BELIEVE IT!!!

July 17th – 23rd : 4-H week with over thirty clubs and over 400 4-H members planning to attend, in three different time slots.

July 24th & 25th : “Country Fest at Home”, a first class two day live streamed concert.

Between each band “Agriculture Up Close and Personal” video clips of some of what visitors would typically see at Country Fest (e.g. sheep shearer, sheep dog/ducks, horse shoeing and 4-H shows).

July 26th – 29th : Home Arts & Garden competitions, the other historical element of Country Fest, will take over the Fairgrounds Exhibition building.
